How to Create a Strong Password (and Remember It) in 2026

Most account hacks start with a weak or reused password. A strong password is easier to make than you think. You can generate one instantly with our free password generator.

What makes a password strong?

  • Length. Longer is stronger. Aim for at least 12 characters, and 16 or more for important accounts like email and banking.
  • Randomness. Real random characters or words, not patterns like Password@123 or your name and birth year.
  • Uniqueness. A different password for every account.

Why length beats complexity

Each extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords. A random 16-character password is vastly harder to crack than an 8-character one with special symbols. Modern security guidance also advises against forcing frequent changes. Change a password when you suspect a leak, not on a calendar.

Option 1: Random password from a generator

Use a generator and a password manager. The password has no meaning, which is exactly why it is strong. Our password generator creates passwords in your browser using the secure random generator. Nothing is sent to our server.

Option 2: A passphrase

Four or five unrelated random words are long, strong and easier to remember. For example: teacup-orbit-mango-ladder. Do not use famous phrases or song lyrics.

What to avoid

  • Names, birthdays, phone numbers, vehicle numbers and company names
  • Keyboard patterns (qwerty, 123456)
  • Simple substitutions (P@ssw0rd)
  • Reusing a password on several sites
  • Sharing passwords in chat or email

How to remember so many passwords

Use a reputable password manager. You remember one strong master passphrase and it stores the rest. Most browsers and phones also have built-in managers. Keep your master password and recovery codes in a safe place.

Add a second lock: two-step verification

Turn on two-step verification (2FA) for email, banking, GST portal, social media and cloud storage. Prefer an authenticator app or a hardware key over SMS where possible. See the business account security checklist.

FAQs

Is it safe to use an online password generator?

It is safe when the password is generated inside your browser and never sent to a server. Our tool works that way.

How often should I change my password?

Change it if there is a breach, if you shared it, or if you used it on more than one site. Otherwise a strong unique password does not need regular rotation.
