How to Pack a Parcel for Courier: Safe Packing Tips for Small Sellers
Good packing is the cheapest way to protect your reputation. A damaged parcel means a refund, a return and an unhappy customer. These tips work for most small online sellers.
1. Use the right box
- Choose a sturdy corrugated box, not a thin or reused one with weak corners.
- The item should fit with space for cushioning, and nothing should rattle.
- For clothes, a poly mailer or tamper-proof bag is enough.
2. Cushion fragile items
- Wrap each item individually in bubble wrap.
- Leave about 2 to 3 cm of padding on all sides, including the top and bottom.
- Fill gaps with paper, air pillows or foam so nothing moves when you shake the box.
3. Protect electronics and devices
Keep items in original packaging, with a second outer box. Keep cameras, adapters and cables together in small bags so nothing is lost.
4. Seal properly
- Use strong packing tape and close all seams using the "H" method: along the middle seam and both edges.
- Do not use thin cello tape.
- Use tamper-evident tape for high-value goods.
5. Label correctly
- Stick the shipping label on the largest flat side, away from seams.
- Make sure the barcode is flat and not covered with wrinkled tape. Use clear tape on top.
- Add your return address and phone number.
- Mark fragile items with Fragile and This Side Up. Our label generator prints these in a bold box.
6. Weigh and measure
Couriers charge by the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight (length ร width ร height in cm รท 5,000 is a common formula for many couriers). Use the smallest box that is safe, and enter the right weight to avoid weight-discrepancy charges.
7. Take proof
Take a photo or short video of the packed parcel with the label before handing it over. It helps in damage or "empty parcel" claims.
8. Include an invoice or slip
Put a copy of your invoice inside. See GST invoice format and use the free invoice generator.
